The Origin – A City Without a Signature Race
Until 2020, Lucknow — a city of nearly 4 million people, capital of India's most populous state — did not have a flagship community marathon. Runners from the City of Nawabs travelled to Delhi, Kanpur or Varanasi to race. Rungreen, headquartered in Lucknow, set out to change that. The Lucknow Run was conceived as the city's signature mass-participation race — open, inclusive, and built around the city's nawabi heritage.
Lucknow Run 2nd Edition – Virtual, Nov 2020 (3,500 runners across India)
When COVID-19 made on-ground mass races impossible in 2020, Rungreen took the Lucknow Run nationwide as a virtual event. Runners across India registered, completed their chosen distance on their own routes, uploaded GPS data, and received e-bibs, race kits, and medals by courier. The result: 3,500 participants from across India, making it one of the largest virtual runs of that pandemic year.
The virtual format proved two things — the Lucknow Run brand had national appeal, and Rungreen's Lucknow event management operations could scale digitally. The learning fed directly into how on-ground editions were rebuilt the following year.
Lucknow Run 3rd Edition – 31 October 2021 (1,000+ runners)
October 2021 marked the return of the Lucknow Run on the streets of the city. Over 1,000 runners gathered for an early-morning start that wound through Lucknow's iconic landmarks. Multi-distance categories — 5 km, 10 km, half marathon — opened the race to first-timers, club runners, and serious half-marathoners alike. Strict COVID protocols were maintained at start village and aid stations.
Lucknow Run 4th Edition – November 2022 (1,000+ runners)
The 2022 edition consolidated the Lucknow Run's place in the city's annual sporting calendar. Corporate teams from Lucknow's IT, banking, and hospitality sectors registered en masse. Live timing, finisher's certificates within 24 hours, and a community fitness expo at the start village became permanent fixtures from this edition onward.
Lucknow Run 2024 – 27 October 2024
The 2024 edition further expanded the multi-distance format and added enhanced runner amenities — chip timing across all categories, expanded medical infrastructure across the route, and a post-race community celebration with live music and breakfast at the start village. Rungreen's in-house event rental operation in Lucknow handled all on-ground production.
Lucknow Run 2025 – 2 November 2025
The most recent edition, held on 2 November 2025, became the largest and most polished Lucknow Run to date. Highlights included a dedicated kids' run category, a women-only wave start, a sustainability initiative removing single-use plastic from aid stations, and live results streamed in real time to runner families via the race app.

Impact on Lucknow's Running Community
The Lucknow Run has done more than fill a calendar slot. It has seeded local running groups, inspired weekly long-run meet-ups, given corporate wellness programmes a flagship event, and put Lucknow on India's marathon map. Several Lucknow runners now travel to half and full marathons across India — and many of them ran their first race at a Lucknow Run.
